Joe Cardos, a death row inmate, is scheduled to be executed for murdering three women. Feeling bitter and resentful, Joe refuses to see his sister or the prison chaplain, but changes his mind when he requests a woman's company for his last night, citing a desire for "fun". Two detectives bring in Dora, a down-on-her-luck former waitress who had attempted to drown herself earlier that night. Despite her despair, Dora agrees to spend the night with Joe for the money, hoping it will be enough for a decent funeral.
