A seasoned New Orleans journalist reflects on a remarkable individual, the formidable boxer Socks Barbarossa, in his final days before retirement.

In the vibrant city of New Orleans, a prizefighter named Socks Barbarrosa shocks the crowd by fleeing the ring before a title bout, vowing never to fight again. Despite his cryptic reasons, his girlfriend Angela remains loyal, but her father, a blind man known as "The Judge," rejects Socks, branding him a coward. Socks joins the army, earns a hero's reputation in Korea, and returns to widespread acclaim. However, his past holds a secret that will ultimately redeem him in the eyes of the Judge.
