Jakob Beer, a middle-aged Polish Jew, reflects on his life, including his traumatic experiences during World War II. After witnessing the murder of his parents and the abduction of his sister Bella, Jakob was smuggled out of Poland by Athos Roussos, a Greek national, and eventually settled in Canada. Haunted by memories of Bella, especially her piano playing, Jakob's reflections led to the writing of a successful book. His struggles to overcome the past also affected his marriage, which ultimately failed. However, Jakob's lifelong friendship with a Jewish family who shared similar experiences brought him comfort and understanding.
