In August 1863, Jim Dancer seeks revenge against the man who killed his brother, joining Quantrell's raiders in Lawrence, Kansas. He mistakenly kills Yancey, who was not the killer, and later learns that the real killer is Bert Slocum, Yancey's brother. After the Civil War, Dancer becomes a fugitive, hunted by Slocum and detective George Cummings. Dancer kills Cummings and assumes his identity, becoming a track-worker in Lanyard, Kansas. He eventually becomes the town marshal, but must face off against Bert Slocum and corrupt local officials who oppose his law-and-order approach.
