Danton background

Danton

During the height of the French Revolution's Reign of Terror, Georges Danton, a passionate advocate for the common people, faces off against Maximilien Robespierre and his radical followers.

The movie opens in November 1793, as Danton returns to Paris from his country retreat after learning about the Committee for Public Safety's massive executions, known as The Terror, instigated by Robespierre. Danton, confident in the people's support, clashes with his former ally Robespierre, who eventually has Danton and his followers arrested, tried before a revolutionary tribunal, and sentenced to death by guillotine.
