A shell-shocked man struggles to regain his memories in 1940. The story takes a dramatic turn back to 1939, where an American reporter, Carole Peters, crosses paths with a Polish airman and piano virtuoso, Stefan Radetzky, during the Nazi invasion of Poland. Years later, they reunite in New York, fall in love, and get married. However, the thought of Stefan returning to fight against the Nazis is a daunting prospect for Carole, not only due to personal fears but also because it seems a waste of his remarkable musical talent.
