Texas cattleman Opie Bedloe visits his son Joe, a college poetry instructor, in Maine to persuade him to leave teaching and take over the family ranch. Opie wants to retire and Joe's wife Connie, who is pregnant, longs for steaks that she can't afford on Joe's salary. Opie arranges for the local butcher to cut his prices in half, paying the difference himself, so Connie can enjoy her desired meat.
