A couple of days before his 18th birthday, Laranjinha reveals to his best friend Acerola that he misses his unknown father. Acerola decides to help his friend find him, and they discover he's in prison, soon to be released on parole, after being convicted of killing a man during a robbery. Meanwhile, Acerola's wife Cris is offered a job in São Paulo and sees an opportunity to earn money to buy a house, but tells Acerola he must care for their son Clayton alone for a year.

Two 17-year-old friends, Acerola and Laranjinha, are about to turn 18 when they uncover secrets about their fathers' pasts, threatening to destroy their long-standing friendship amidst a backdrop of violence and rival drug gangs in Rio's favelas.
