A black soldier deserts the Union army after killing an officer and heads for the Mexican border, where he encounters a crippled Indian who becomes his reluctant servant. As they travel south, they form an uneasy alliance and find shelter in an abandoned church, where they scavenge supplies from a deceased prospector. The soldier and the Indian develop an unlikely friendship, enjoying fried chicken and moonshine, and the Indian adopts a one-eyed chicken as his pet. However, their peaceful days are disrupted by a bounty hunter seeking the soldier's capture and a gang of murderous Mexican bandits, leading to a violent and dramatic conclusion.
