In the late 19th century, a writer named Richard Darrell saves a man named Don Carlos from robbers and is tasked with delivering a valuable necklace to Spain. Richard leaves his fiancée Oriana and begins his journey, only to encounter Sir Francis Castleton, an aristocrat who seeks to steal Oriana from Richard. Richard is attacked, robbed, and left for dead, and as a result, he loses his memory. He then marries a gypsy girl named Rosal, while Oriana believes him to be dead and marries Sir Francis instead. As their paths eventually cross again, a series of complications unfold.
