During World War II, a British commando raid is sent to German-occupied Benghazi in North Africa to seize vital documents from the enemy's headquarters. Led by Major David Brand, the mission features Captain Jimmy Leith, a skilled Arabic speaker familiar with the city. The presence of Brand's wife, Jane, who was Leith's lover before the war, adds tension to their relationship. Brand, unproven in combat, freezes during a crucial moment, losing the respect of his men. The perilous journey back claims the lives of most senior officers, leaving only one survivor.
