Tommy Williams, a struggling singer, becomes obsessed with reaching Broadway, but his current gig at a spaghetti house isn't getting him anywhere. He teams up with Penny Morris, a talented singer herself, to promote a show featuring orphaned children on a country holiday. However, his true intentions are self-serving, and Penny soon discovers his ulterior motives. As Tommy's personal life spirals out of control, he faces a series of challenges, including a missed engagement in Philadelphia, the outbreak of war in Europe, and a complicated romance.
